About Kas

I am a full-time photographic artist based in Nova Scotia, where my spirit is sustained and my work is inspired by the wild coastal scenery and moody weather right outside my door.

Indeed, it was my passion for wild landscapes that gave me my start as a photographer. After spending my formative years on Canada’s Atlantic coast in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, circumstances stranded me for nearly twenty years in Toronto. Never happy in cities, I escaped at every opportunity ‘up north’ or ‘down east’ where I could find the breathing room that for me is so essential.

Along with my tent, canoe and hiking boots I always took a bag full of guidebooks about the natural history and geology of the places I visited. Gradually I progressed from reading these books to writing them, and my writing needed illustrations… and that’s  when I picked up a camera.

Now, twenty-five years later, I make my home again at the edge of the sea and my living from photography, using it to explore the landscape in the context of broader human and environmental themes. My portfolio includes an extensive list of publications, exhibitions, art/craft shows and teaching, with several books and feature articles in Canadian and U.K. magazines.
